Earth Day 2002

April 20, 2002
........................

South Bend citizens celebrated Earth Day on Saturday, April 20. The event was held in Potawatomi Park on the near east side of South Bend. The Earth Day celebration began at 11:00 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m.

Diane Mendelsohn coordinated the Earth Day activities. The park's staff provided picnic tables for organizations to display literature and exhibits.

Don Brubaker, Lance Howard, Kathleen Kaiser, Dave Vollrath, Gabrielle O'Conner and Tom Brown took turns talking to the public at the Greens table. Twenty-eight people signed our contact sheet. We welcome all of them to the Greens!

The hit of the day was Bismark. Bismark is a 180 pound Newfoundland dog who belongs to Kathleen and David Kaiser. Bismark is as gentle as he is big and a certified child magnet. He sat quietly as child after child stopped to pet him. His only complaint was that he didn't get a piece of an elephant ear pastry that ended up too close to his nose.
