Candlelight Peace Vigil

On Sunday night a group of about 250-300 gathered at the Morris Performing Arts Center to begin a candlelight vigil, organized by Moveon.org. We walked up Michigan Ave. past the rose garden, finally forming a circle at Leeper Park island.

The coordinator was a courageous young woman who'd never before organized any action but decided to take the plunge in the name of protesting this war.

WNDU-TV and WSBT covered the protest and interviewed several people.

Holding candles at the river's edge and under a full moon, we began singing songs of peace and protest; 'Down by the riverside', 'This land is my land, this land is your land'.

Again, no matter how small, every act of protest against this war takes us further toward global disarmament and peace.

Down By the Riverside

Gonna lay down my sword and shield
Down by the riverside
Down by the riverside
Down by the riverside
Gonna lay down my sword and shield
Down by the riverside
Ain't gonna study war no more.

Photos of vigils around the world can be found at Moveon.org.

MoveOn is also asking people to light candles in their windows the night the war begins.
