Camp Casey Coming to South Bend

November 18, 2005
............................

The Christian Peacemaker Team group and other groups in South Bend plan to host a "Camp Casey" - similar to the Camp that grew up around Cindy Sheehan when she went to Texas to protest the war on behalf of her son Casey, who was killed in Iraq.

A "Camp Casey" was set up in Fort Wayne last month for 2 weeks, and met with incredible success. There is MUCH energy around planning for this camp, which will be held for 2 weeks in January, falling sometime around Martin Luther King Day. The idea is to keep a constant presence (even sleeping in tents) for two weeks and to host workshops and speakers around issues of war, such as conscientious objection, PTSD, war tax resistance, etc., throughout the time.

A Camp Casey planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 28th, at 3 PM, (location TBA.)

Organizers are looking for a space to site the encampment. Although the camp itself will be outside, campers and visitors need a building, such as a church, school or business, which will allow access to restrooms, and hopefully, showers, a kitchen and an indoor meeting room. The site should have enough space adjacent to the building for several tents, some of which will be used for resource materials; and adequate nearby parking.

Campers and their supporters will commit to maintaining cleanliness and security at the site and will provide all the food needed. The best sites will offer drive by visibility or be close to high traffic flow.

If you have such a space and would be willing to let Camp Casey use it for 2 weeks sometime between Jan. 9-31, please contact Ellyn Stecker at 574-289-2126 or . If you want more information, also contact Ellyn Stecker.
