Impeachment Momentum Grows in Public & House of Representatives

Impeachment momentum is building!

A telephone survey of 1,100 Americans on July 3-5 by the American Research Group (1) found that 54 percent favor beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Cheney, and 45 percent favor initiating impeachment proceedings against President Bush. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, 95 percent of the time.

Commenting upon the ARG survey, Dave Lindorff in a July 7 blog post (2) notes that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic leadership have been opposed to impeachment, in part, because it would "turn off" independent voters. Lindorff notes that the ARG survey doesn't support this conclusion, because 51 percent of independents favored initiating impeachment against Cheney, and 50 percent favored impeachment against Bush. If the Democrats initiated impeachment they might even pick up some Republicans, because 17 percent of Republicans favored initiating proceedings against Cheney, and 13 percent favored proceedings against Bush.
