Below find a forward from Save the Dunes Council and 11 other organizations objecting to IDEM's draft permit to U.S. Steel and requesting that EPA Region 5 hold a public hearing on the objections (3). You Can Help! Contact the United States Environmental Protection Agency to Request a Public Hearing!
On October 11, 2007 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the news to the public that they had filed objections to the U.S. Steel NPDES permit recently drafted by IDEM. Save the Dunes Council along with 11 other organizations, has requested that EPA Region 5 hold a public hearing on the objections in Gary, IN to ensure participation by those most impacted by U.S. Steel's operations.
When the EPA reviews a permit, they are required to consider the level of public interest to determine if a public hearing is warranted. Your action is needed to let them know you want an opportunity for the public to express their concerns.
Contact the EPA and let them know you are grateful that they have objected to the permit and request them to hold a public hearing to ensure the permit issues are fully addressed.
