Bill Moyers' Tough Talk on Impeachment

Click the following link (1) for an OUTSTANDING July 13 interview on the PBS series "Bill Moyers Journal" entitled TOUGH TALK ON IMPEACHMENT, featuring conservative constitutional scholar Bruce Fein, and progressive correspondent, editor, and author John Nichols. The compelling interview makes crystal clear why President Bush and Vice President Cheney must be impeached, and how Congress and the Fourth Estate (the press and the media) are abdicating their responsibilities and must change. Links are also included for a number of excellent articles on impeachment, including some authored by Fein and Nichols. The July 13 program also includes Moyers' informative essay on the history of impeachment (2).

Related to comments made during the July 13 interview, check also Moyers' concise, powerful June 29 essay (3) on the corporate and political implications of Rupert Murdoch's potential purchase of The Wall Street Journal; his June 22 interview (4) with Ken Silverstein on "the inner-workings of the Washington lobbying world;" and Moyers' June 15 essay (5) on President Bush's potential pardon of I. Lewis Libby (Bush commuted Libby's sentence on July 3, and many expect Bush to issue a complete pardon toward the end of his office).

Moyers' programs are always powerful and well documented. See, for example, the special and comprehensive April 25 program (6) entitled "Buying the War," on the ways in which the mainstream media abdicated their responsibility in the lead up to the Iraq war. See also Moyers' May 11 segment (7) on the massive physical, psychological, financial, and societal costs of the Iraq war. The public is way ahead of Congress on impeachment. A July 3-5 telephone survey of 1,100 citizens by the American Research Group (9) found that 54 percent favor beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Cheney, and 45 percent favor initiating impeachment proceedings against President Bush.
While following rather than leading, momentum for impeachment is building in Congress. Because of daily revelations about the past and present crimes of Bush and Cheney, and the fear of new and continued future crimes, THE NUMBER OF HOUSE CO-SPONSORS FOR REP. DENNIS KUCINICH'S BILL OF IMPEACHMENT (H.R. 333) AGAINST VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY HAS NOW INCREASED TO FOURTEEN! Senator Barbara Boxer's recent statement that impeachment of the president should be "ON THE TABLE," as reported by Dave Lindorff on July 12 (10), is expected to further contribute to the momentum.
As I've said before (e.g., 11, 12), for the welfare of present and future generations here and abroad, impeachment proceedings against Cheney, or both Bush and Cheney, cannot begin too quickly.
